This year is about being real, practical, and proactive. Like you, we want to keep the promises we make to ourselves. That is why we invite you to set yourself up for success with resolutions that are easy to achieve and have real results. We’re talking about practicing safe driving to feel responsible and fulfilled while you contribute to making our roads safer.
Resolution #1: Zero screens when driving (except GPS)
It is never recommended to take your eyes off the road for too long. You may be doing well, but if a risk suddenly arises on the road, it is important that you see it quickly to react in time. Avoid watching videos, answering text messages or carrying out any management directly on your mobile phone while driving.
It is recommended to set everything up before you go on your way, or if your vehicle has a display and an integrated smart system, you can make quick changes from there. If you need to see your phone or perform any tasks that require your concentration to be off of the road, it is better to wait, find a safe place to park and then handle the task.
Resolution #2: Wear your seatbelt
Wearing a belt can save your life. According to the data, 49% of road fatalities involved people who were not buckled up. Understanding the importance of wearing a seatbelt and wearing it can save your life.
Resolution #3: Check your car's condition periodically
Keeping your car maintained with timely safety checks can help keep you and your family safer on the road. Many manufacturers' instructions base their recommendations on the distance traveled. However, different factors can affect your car's condition. Checking the maintenance of your car more often than indicated by the manufacturer, even before and after long trips, can make sure that it is safer to drive. Consider reviewing the following details of your car:
- Evidence of fluid leaks in the space where you park your car
- Engine oil, antifreeze and coolant levels
, - Check if your tires need rotation, alignment, air or have contusions that could cause an accident
- Brakes are in good working order
- Windshield wipers function properly
- Emergency brake works correctly
Taking care of these details not only keeps your vehicle in good condition, but it can also reduce the risk of accidents.
Resolution #4: Schedule the renewal of the vehicle registration on time
Remembering the date your vehicle registration expires and renewing it beforehand can avoid a fine. In many cases, you can renew your vehicle registration online. If you have recently moved to Texas, other rules apply and you will generally have 30 days to transfer your registration to Texas.
Resolution #5: Follow traffic laws
Pay special attention to observing the following traffic laws in 2026:
- Stop *completely* at stop signs
- Slow down and prepare to stop at yellow lights
- Yield properly
- Respect the law: move or slow down
- Keep the street and sidewalk in front of your home clear of debris so pedestrians have a safe place to walk and cars are not at risk of colliding with debris
Resolution #6: Do not exceed the speed limit.
No matter the location, follow the speed limit. It is estimated that approximately 25% of the fatal accidents on Texas roads were at least partly caused by a driver speeding. In addition, there may be sudden hazards on the road, such as a deer running into your lane or a reckless driver.
Resolution #7: Schedule your departures with enough travel time
This resolution goes hand in hand with the previous one. Use websites or apps like Google Maps, Waze, or Maps to determine how long you need to get to your destination. Some apps allow you to see how much travel time you'll need based on the traffic forecast for the day and time of your trip.
After determining the travel time you need, give yourself enough time for any mishaps that may occur before you set out on your way. By doing so, you can travel with less stress and make time in case of a delay, reducing the risk of an accident.
Reach your destination safely.
As we embark on another year, our resolve is to support you in making the journey safe and enjoyable. We invite you to adopt these resolutions to protect yourself, and your rights, in the event of an accident. Stay safe on the road in 2026 and count on The Carlson Law Firm to protect your rights.
