Federal Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) Against Roblox

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated nearly 30 federal lawsuits into:

In re: Roblox Corp. Child Sexual Exploitation and Assault Litigation
Case No. 3:25-md-03166
U.S. District Court, Northern District of California

The MDL is assigned to U.S. District Judge Richard Seeborg.

At the time of consolidation:

  • Nearly 80 cases had been filed
  • Cases spanned 18 federal districts
  • Multiple state attorneys general had filed related enforcement actions
  • Additional cases were anticipated

Judge Seeborg appointed five nationally recognized attorneys as co-lead counsel in the litigation, signaling the seriousness of the allegations and the scale of the proceedings.

This is not a single lawsuit. It is coordinated federal litigation involving families across the country.

How is Roblox Liable for Child Safety?

Roblox markets itself as a platform designed for children. When a company develops and markets a product specifically for minors, it may assume legal obligations to implement reasonable safety measures. Reasonable safety protections do not require perfection. They require meaningful, enforceable safeguards that reflect the known risks of the product.

The lawsuits in the federal multidistrict litigation allege that Roblox failed to meet those responsibilities.

Under negligence principles, companies that know children use their product may be required to take reasonable steps to prevent foreseeable harm.

The MDL alleges that Roblox knew the following:

  • Adult users could create accounts and pose as minors
  • Private messaging allowed direct access to children
  • Grooming behaviors were occurring on the platform
  • Predators were encouraging minors to move conversations to secondary apps such as Discord
  • Parental controls could be bypassed or disabled

Furthermore, it failed to implement basic protections. Lawsuits against Roblox allege the company could have implemented the following:

  • Effective age verification measures
  • Monitoring systems capable of detecting grooming patterns
  • Rapid response systems for reports of exploitation
  • Meaningful restrictions on adult-minor direct messaging
  • Clear warnings to parents about known risks

We are asserting on behalf of our clients that Roblox had access to data, user reports, and internal information demonstrating patterns of exploitation, but failed to take sufficient steps to redesign or restrict features that allowed predators to contact children.

How Is Roblox Responding to the Allegations?

Roblox has publicly denied wrongdoing in response to state enforcement actions and civil lawsuits. The company has stated that it does not intentionally place users at risk and has emphasized recent efforts to enhance safety protections on the platform.

In recent updates, Roblox has announced new or expanded safety features, including:

  • Restrictions on certain direct messaging functions for users under 13
  • Expanded parental supervision tools
  • Content maturity labeling and age-based experience filtering
  • “Age estimation” technology for certain account features
  • Additional moderation initiatives and reporting tools

The central legal issue is not whether new features exist today. It is whether meaningful safeguards should have been implemented sooner and more comprehensively.

Roblox maintains that these measures demonstrate its commitment to improving child safety. If your child was a victim of grooming, sexually exploited or otherwise harmed by Roblox’s lack of safeguards, our attorneys can help.
