Deadlines can vary. Insurance companies often require claims to be filed promptly, while FEMA typically sets a 60-day deadline from the date of a disaster declaration. Check with both agencies directly to confirm your timeline.

After ensuring your safety and that of your family, document the damage with photos and videos, contact your insurance company to start a claim, and secure your property to prevent further loss if it’s safe to do so.

Most standard homeowners insurance policies do cover damage caused by wildfires, including damage to your home, personal belongings, and additional living expenses if you are displaced. However, it’s important to check your individual policy, as coverage limits and exclusions may apply.

If your policy falls short, you may qualify for assistance through FEMA’s Individual Assistance Program, Small Business Administration disaster loans, or state-specific relief programs.

FEMA provides grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and other disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. You must apply through FEMA’s Disaster Assistance portal or helpline once a disaster has been declared.

You can apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling FEMA’s disaster helpline, or in person at a Disaster Recovery Center. Be ready to provide personal identification, details of your losses, and proof of insurance.

Renters may also be eligible for FEMA aid, which can help with temporary housing costs and replacement of personal property. Renter’s insurance may also cover some wildfire-related losses.
