LOS ANGELES — Two juries have returned significant verdicts in separate social media litigation cases this week, marking a pivotal moment in ongoing litigation over the impact of social media platforms on youth.
In the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL), a New Mexico jury awarded $375 million to the state of New Mexico following a case brought by the state attorney general. In California’s Judicial Council Coordinated Proceeding (JCCP), a jury awarded $6 million to an individual plaintiff in a bellwether personal injury trial.
Together, these verdicts represent early wins for plaintiffs and signal that juries are beginning to hold social media companies accountable for the alleged harm caused by their platforms.
