Your well-being is part of your family’s well-being, too. You deserve to feel heard and respected, and to understand your options. If something in your relationship concerns you, you can seek information and support without having to decide today what to do next.

For Hispanic individuals in the United States, being able to discuss a difficult situation in their preferred language can make that first conversation easier. Professionals and organizations offering services in Spanish can listen and help you explore options based on your needs.

If you are looking for resources for domestic violence victims, this guide offers helplines, local organizations and Spanish-language support options in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Domestic Violence Can Take Different Forms

The U.S. Department of Justice explains that domestic violence can include behaviors one partner uses to gain or maintain power and control over the other. It can involve a current or former partner.

In addition to physical violence, it can include:

  • Sexual abuse: pressuring or forcing sexual contact without consent.
  • Emotional abuse: repeatedly insulting, humiliating or belittling someone.
  • Economic abuse: restricting access to money or other resources.
  • Psychological abuse: intimidating, threatening or isolating someone from family and friends.
  • Technological abuse: using devices or apps to monitor, harass or control someone.

Respect also shows in everyday interactions: in how your opinions are heard, your boundaries are respected and your independence is recognized.

Domestic Violence Affects Both Women and Men

According to the CDC report published in February 2026, using 2023–2024 data:

  • About 1 in 3 women (34%) have experienced physical violence, sexual violence or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime.
  • About 1 in 6 men (17%) have experienced at least one of those same forms of violence.
  • Psychological aggression by an intimate partner was measured separately: 30.2% of women and 22.3% of men have experienced it during their lifetime.

These categories can overlap, so the percentages should not be added together. The estimates cover the 50 states and Washington, D.C., excluding Puerto Rico. Changes in survey methods mean these results cannot be compared directly with earlier surveys to establish trends.

Behind every statistic is a person who deserves respect and support, regardless of gender.
