An 8-year-old boy was seriously injured when he was struck in an alleged drunk driving accident in Georgetown while he was crossing the street with siblings on Tuesday, officials said.

The boy was identified as Isaiah Justice. Justice was transported to Dell Children’s Medical Center as a result of injuries he endured in the drunk driver pedestrian accident.

Police identified that man that struck the young boy as 59-year-old Charles Thurmond. Police said Thurmond was traveling on Northwest Boulevard near Janis Driver in a Ford SUV, when he struck the child.

Witnesses told police Thurmond attempted to flee the scene of the pedestrian accident in Georgetown but they followed his vehicle and led officials to the vehicle.

Emergency personnel reported that Justice was recently listed in critical condition. His condition was improving, authorities noted.

As back-to-school begins, thousands of children across the state will begin frequenting crosswalks, parks and roadways near their homes and schools before and after school. In fact, according to the NHTSA, more children are struck by vehicles during afternoon hours than any other period during the day, highlighting the extreme danger posed to children as a result of negligent, speeding and inattentive drivers.
