Now Accepting Peanut Butter Salmonella Cases

J.M. Smuckers Co. is recalling thousands of jars of their Natural Peanut Butter Chunky because of possible salmonella contamination.

According to the company, the potentially contaminated spread would have been purchased by consumers within the last week, with “best if used by” dates of August 3, 2012 and August 4, 2012.

The production codes associated with the problematic peanut butter are 137004 and 1308004.

Retailers in an array of states have been affected by the recall, including those in Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Wisconsin and District of Columbia.

Although no illnesses have been reported in relation to the potentially contaminated peanut butter, authorities warn consumers that the results of contact with the contagion could result in serious complications and sickness. According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the symptoms associated with salmonella contamination include:

  • Fever
  • Cramps
  • Diarrhea (lasting several days)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Blood in the stool

The symptoms can sometimes last as long as four to seven days. Some strains of salmonella can actually result in typhoid fever, which can be fatal.
