Former Nolanville Mayor Sentenced to 60 Years

A Bell County judge sentenced former Nolanville Mayor, Charlie Stewart, Sr. to 60 years in a Texas state prison for the continuous sexual assault of a child after a jury convicted him earlier this year, court documents revealed Tuesday.

The charges stemmed from a 2012 arrest tied to a 12-year-old girl’s outcry that she was raped by Stewart on multiple occasions. Stewart was charged with sexual assault of a child, aggravated sexual assault of a child and continuous sexual abuse of a child in relation to the girl’s allegations, which were investigated by local police after they were called by a local hospital. The abuse began in the summer of 2011, the girl told police.

Officials have not revealed whether other victims have come forward or whether they believe other victims exist, although the Bell County District Attorney requested a life sentence in relation to the abuse, saying “for more than 20 years he’s molested children.”

Child Sexual Abuse Attorney in Texas

Every year, thousands of child sexual abuse allegations are made across the nation, some involving children who’ve been repeatedly victimized and others involving singular experiences. Despite the prevalence of such outcries, experts highlight the existence of a high number of victims who never report the abuse, sexual assault or molestation they have endured. Whether a child has made an outcry or an adult is seeking justice for sexual abuse that occurred in the past, some victims need the closure that comes with holding abusers responsible and preventing others from being victimized similarly.

In some instances, companies or leaders may have protected or prevented abuse victims from continuous abuse or sexual assault. Some examples of inadequate protection include:

  • Covering up molestation or sexual assault
  • Failing to provide adequate protection or security against sexual assault
  • Turning a blind eye or failing to report abuse
