More Faulty Airbags: Toyota And Lexus Recall 49,000 Vehicles

Toyota and Lexus have recalled  49,000 more vehicles in the U.S. due to an electrical issue that could prevent the deployment of airbags in a collision leaving passengers unprotected, and susceptible to very serious injuries.

2016 Prius hybrids, 2016 Lexus RX SUVs, and 2015-16 Lexus NX hybrids are on the latest list of recalled vehicles due to potential airbag deployment failure.

What causes airbag defects?

The airbag sensors have insulation layers that could peel over time, and an open circuit could be created. If this were to happen, the airbag warning light would turn on, and the side, curtain shield, and front airbags may not deploy.  An airbag non-deployment poses a risk of injury to the occupants in the event of a crash.

How to find out if your vehicle is affected?

You can search on the National Traffic Safety Administration’s recall site by entering your vehicle identification number (VIN) to check if your vehicle is on the recall list.

According to Toyota, notifications will be sent to the owner’s of the affected vehicles starting late March. Lexus and Toyota will inspect sensors and replace them if needed.
