Number of pedestrian deaths are up in San Antonio

According to San Antonio’s KSAT, pedestrian deaths in the city are up 57 percent this year, compared to the same time period in 2015

So far this year, 44 people have died from being hit by vehicles. In fact, the current pedestrian death tolls are closer now to 2015’s overall year-end total.

Last year, the city introduced its Vision Zero initiative, in an effort to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the community. Their goal: Zero fatalities on San Antonio roadways.

However, as evidenced by the increase in pedestrian deaths in 2016, it’s not working.

According to April Luna, the Transportation and Capital Improvements spokeswoman, $1 million has been allocated to do engineering studies and improvements to high crash corridors and intersections.

The San Antonio Police Department says the majority of pedestrian accidents happen at night, when a person is crossing a big road and not in a crosswalk.

On a national level, a pedestrian is killed every 2 hours in traffic crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Research also shows that the majority of crashes happen in urban areas between the hours of 6 – 8:59 p.m.
