Three Killed in Bicycle-Car Accident Near Texas Tech

A bicycle-pickup truck accident near Texas Tech in Lubbock, left three people dead Sunday morning and resulted in the intoxication manslaughter arrest of the truck’s driver, officials said.

According to authorities, 26-year-old Brian Cody Hawthorne was arrested before being released to the hospital with critical injuries.

Two of Hawthorne’s passengers were pronounced dead at the scene of the car accident in Lubbock along with the bicyclist who was struck by the vehicle near Glenna Goodacre Boulevard.

Arturo Hernandez Almaguer, 23, and Kendrick Lamar Johsnon, 27, were identified as the passengers of the pickup truck, killed in the tragic accident.

Police identified the bicyclist as 68-year-old Courtland Whitmore. Whitmore was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reports noted that the 2001 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck hit a curb before rolling over and smashing into Whitmore on his bicycle. The pickup then crashed into a nearby fire hydrant before coming to a stop.

Officials are attributing alcohol and speed as the cause of the fatal accident in Lubbock.
